Has anyone made a chess game in Second Life that does not have to have individual piece prims?

Given Second Life's nature I don't know how they would do that other than creating a different texture for every possible layout of the pieces (and that wouldn't be too efficient).

If your problem with the free board is the prim count you have this 73 prim option:
