GIF
GIF stands for
Graphics Interchange Format. It is an old image format that was introduced by the CompuServe online service back in the late 1980s.
GIF images may contain up to 256 unique colors, support a "background" or
transparency mask, and can contain multiple frames for a sort of rudimentary "
animation."
The PNG format is considered generally superior to
GIF and is preferred wherever possible.
PNG and
GIF have one trait in common--neither are supported upload formats for the
SecondLife client, which only imports the
TGA,
BMP, or
JPEG image
file formats.
Another trait PNG and
GIF share is that they are in no way related to
LSL.
